Why Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Matters
This is only the third time Japan has hosted the Asian Games, after Tokyo 1958 and Hiroshima 1994, and the first Games since Hangzhou 2022. Beyond continental pride, Aichi-Nagoya 2026 doubles as an Olympic pathway : results here feed directly into LA28 qualification in archery, hockey, sailing, squash, surfing, tennis and triathlon, and count indirectly in cricket, judo, skateboarding and weightlifting. For many of Asia’s best, a medal in Nagoya is also a ticket toward Los Angeles.
The programme blends 32 Olympic sports with events that define Asian sport — cricket, kabaddi, sepaktakraw, kurash and wushu — plus modern additions such as esports, breaking, mixed martial arts, surfing and the two newest entries, padel and teqball , both added to the programme in 2026.
How the Medal Programme Works
No finals are held before 20 September — the nine-day head start (basketball from Sep 10, football from Sep 14, cricket from Sep 17) is group-stage action only. The medals then come in waves: 31 golds are decided on the opening medal day (Sep 20) , building to the two biggest days of the Games — 2 October (51 golds) and 24 September (48 golds) . Aquatics offers the most events overall (swimming alone has 41 golds), followed by athletics (50) and shooting (28).

Although the official Asian Games period is September 19 to October 4, 2026 , selected competitions begin before the Opening Ceremony. This makes the full competition calendar longer than the main Games dates.

Stars & Storylines to Watch
Aichi-Nagoya 2026 features Olympic and world champions across the continent. On the artistic gymnastics floor, Japan’s Hashimoto Daiki (Tokyo 2020 all-around gold) and China’s Zhang Boheng renew one of the sport’s great rivalries in front of a home crowd. In athletics, the Philippines’ EJ Obiena returns to defend his Asian Games pole vault title, while gymnast Carlos Yulo carries Philippine hopes after his Paris 2024 success.
Basketball is wide open: the Philippines’ Gilas Pilipinas defend the men’s title they won in 2023 — their first Asian Games gold since 1962 — against perennial powers China, Iran and Jordan. In badminton, India’s two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu headlines a stacked draw. And with China and Japan expected to lead the medal table, the race for third — among South Korea, Iran, Chinese Taipei and the Gulf nations — is where much of the drama sits.

About The Author
