Police in Singapore are investigating the assault of an elderly restaurant worker after he was shoved to the ground for patting a child on the head. Be-ing Wanton Noodle The incident happened on Saturday at Be-Ing Wanton Noodle, a well-known food stall in Singapore’s south-east, with the restaurant sharing CCTV footage of the incident on its social media pages. The footage shows a man, restaurant employee Yeo Song Khoon, walking with a limp between tables, and patting a child who was sitting at one of the tables on the head. The child’s mother appeared to address the man before a man, the child’s father quickly returned to the table and confronted Khoon. The pair have a heated verbal exchange, before the father shoves Khoon to the ground, with the elderly man colliding with tables and chairs in the process. Khoon eventually sits down, and the restaurant revealed on social media the younger man later apologised. “The man sat down with my father, apologised and offered him a drink. While we appreciate that he eventually apologised, my father is now suffering from severe back pain following the incident,” the post said. “A drink and an apology cannot simply take away the physical pain or injuries he is experiencing.” The restaurant claimed they still had not identified the man who shoved Khoon to the ground, but insisted they did not want to confront or harass him. “We simply want the truth to be known and for this matter to be addressed appropriately,” the restaurant said. Khoon spoke to reporters, including Channel Asia News after the incident, and in a translated version of his comments, he insisted he only patted the child on the head because he thought the child was “cute”. “I saw the little girl and she was very adorable, so I patted her head, old people like to pat young children’s heads,” Khoon told reporters. “Then the child’s father came over and asked ‘why’ to the child’s mother. “So I told him [I patted her head] because she was cute, and he was not happy about that.” Khoon confirmed the man had apologised to him after the incident, and claimed the man was Australian. “He said he was from Australia, because I said my noodles are from the UK, US and Australia, [and the man said] ‘I’m from Australia also,’” Khoon said in English. Khoon said he had back pain from the incident, but claimed he was happy to leave the incident to police, insisting he “did not want any trouble”. Singapore Police confirmed in a statement they were investigating the incident. Police investigations are ongoing,” the statement on social media said. “Members of the public are advised not to speculate on the incident or its circumstances, and to allow the Police to conduct investigations and establish the facts of the case.” At the time of writing, no arrests have been made.
