Had this problem before and finally got it solved, but now I had to install new hard-drive and consequently had to install window again. Now I have the same problem. I have HDMI picture on TV but no sound. In the sound playback it show HDMI (not high lighted) and it says "not plug in. The HDMI cable is good and it is plug in. I went to my device manager and I have Standard VGA graphics Adapter. I do show in other devices that 3 are not install Base system Device 2each and Network Controller. I am up to date on my drivers. I don't know how I solved the problem the last time. Anyone have any ideas ? Locked Question. This question was migrated from the Microsoft Support Community. You can vote on whether it's helpful, but you can't add comments or replies or follow the question. All Dell provided drivers for the system in question: ftp://ftp.dell.com/Pages/Drivers/studio-xps-1645.html Have you, in this given order, downloaded and installed (followed by a reboot between each hardware driver installation) the following? Motherboard Chipset ftp://ftp.dell.com/chipset/R228043.exe 2. Wired networking ftp://ftp.dell.com/network/R227595.exe 3. Video ftp://ftp.dell.com/video/R257949.exe 4. Audio ftp://ftp.dell.com/audio/R261324.exe 5. Bluetooth ftp://ftp.dell.com/FOLDER94296M/1/R226750.exe I did not put the wireless network in there because that is something that can be one of a couple (or more) different models - depending on how you specced it at purchase. If you know which wireless network device you have, post that here to keep things straight. The next part is because the latest video driver (which is what you're needing - the audio is just an integrated part of it when you are dealing with the HDMI port output) that Dell has is April of 2010 (quite old)... If you want to try and get things working as you remember, you should open the Device Manager (<-- Link) and look at the Display Adapter. It is likely one of the following: Mobility Radeon HD 3650 Mobility Radeon HD 3450 Mobility Radeon HD 3650 Mobility Radeon HD 3450 Mobility Radeon HD 3670 Mobility Radeon HD 4570 Mobility Radeon HD 4670 Mobility Radeon HD 4330 Mobility Radeon HD 5450 Mobility Radeon HD 5650 Mobility Radeon HD 5470 / HD4200 Mobility Radeon HD 5730

Take note & post it in a reply here to keep things straight. Once you see what specific one it says, visit here: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download From drop down 1, select "Notebook Graphics". From drop down 2, select "Radeon HD Series". From drop down 3, select the proper "Mobility Radeon HD ____ Series" as gleamed from the look in device manager. According to the specs from the manufacturer, it should be one of the highlighted in the picture: From drop down 4, select the proper operating system and architecture. Given where you posted, it should be one of the two highlighted in this picture: Then click on the "Display Results" button and it should take you to a place where you can download the proper driver/software for your chosen options. You want, in this case, the full "Catalyst Software Suite" if shown. The worst case scenario (likely only to happen if you have the 5xxx Mobility Radeon HD series) you'll get a first choice of the " AMD Mobility Radeon™ Driver Verification Tool " and a second choice of the "Latest Beta Driver". What they have been trying to do is put the driver update power in the hands of the laptop manufacturers because of the problems some drivers have had in the past because of conflicts with other hardware the OEM put in the system with said device. Given the Dell Driver is so old, if you have gotten to this point because you have the 5xxx, I suggest getting the "Latest Beta Driver". Save whatever driver choice you end up with to your computer, restart once for good measure and install said driver by running it from where you saved it (do not run it from the Internet - SAVE and RUN from the local computer.) Then restart the computer. You could go another step - see if there are any updated Intel drivers for your system. May want to do this depending on how the HDMI is actually being handled. Sometimes it is a separate video chipset that isn't 'in the spec list'. Usually, if that is true, it is Intel. If you have all the drivers installed from the 1-5 list I did first in the order given and you have the Java Runtime Environment plugin (<-- link) installed, then the Intel scanning utility is one that works fairly dependably - although sometimes their download links are broken for some period of time. You can visit here: http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect And install/run the scanner from the web page and see if there are any newer drivers they suggest installing. After installing anything there (if any) you find - come back and let us know how things went and if your HDMI is now working or not as designed... If it is still not working, there are other avenues: Don't forget to check your audio/sound "Playback devices" tab when connected to something via HDMI - sometimes that can act a little strange. Perhaps we need to look into a more direct route for another driver in your system as well. Maybe something here: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3517/p/19453891/20127656.aspx ... or similar. 14 additional answers Anonymous 2014-01-24T06:55:16+00:00 You just did not understand my reply. No I am not as smart as you. I DON'T KNOW WHAT MAKE OR MODEL I HAVE ! I don't know how you got that star, it sure was not for your knowledge or the way you talk down to people. I will have to see if I can get you off this Microsoft Community ! You need to go play with your games at home or whatever else the little boy likes to play with. Anonymous 2014-01-23T22:30:35+00:00 If you have a "Standard VGA graphics Adapter" and you have devices that are not installed - you are NOT "up to date on [your] drivers"... Figure out the make & model of your system, visit the manufacturer's web page and manually download the drivers for your motherboard chipset, audio, video (perhaps two different devices), network devices, etc. Install them, rebooting as necessary. This is a manual thing. Microsoft did not manufacturer (most likely) your hardware (especially the video, audio, etc.) and thus - do not support it in any manner (including the drivers and software that allows it to communicate with any operating system - including Windows 7 - your chosen OS.) 0 comments No comments Report If you have a "Standard VGA graphics Adapter" and you have devices that are not installed - you are NOT "up to date on [your] drivers"...
