How to Get Help in Windows 11: 6 Methods
发布时间:2026-09-03 | 浏览:1
Windows 11 has several ways to find assistance, and the right one depends on what you need. Taskbar Search is quickest for a straightforward question. The Get Help app is better for guided troubleshooting or contacting Microsoft. Settings includes links to help for the page you are viewing, while Microsoft’s online support site is useful when Windows will not open normally or the built-in tools cannot solve the problem.
Here are six current methods for getting help in Windows 11, including the paths that replace older Control Panel and MSDT instructions.
1. Search for help from the Windows 11 taskbar
Windows Search can search more than help articles. It can return installed apps, files, Settings pages, and web results, making it a good first stop for a general question.
Select the Search box or Search icon on the taskbar.
Enter a question or keywords, such as change display brightness , Bluetooth not working , or Windows update error .
Review the results. Depending on the search, Windows may show a Settings page, an installed app, a local file, or help from the web.
Select the result that best matches the problem.
If the search box is not displayed, select the taskbar’s Search icon. You can also use the Windows Search keyboard shortcut supported by your installed Windows version. The visible taskbar control varies according to your taskbar configuration and Windows updates.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a precise result, describe the symptom rather than entering only a broad word. For example, printer offline Windows 11 is more useful than printer .
2. Open the Get Help app
Get Help is Microsoft’s central Windows help app. It provides tutorials, frequently asked questions, community resources, guided troubleshooting, and—where available—contact with Microsoft support.
Type get help .
Select Get Help from the results.
Enter a description of the problem in the app’s Search field.
Read the suggested articles or select a relevant guided option.
Opening Get Help does not automatically create a support case. If you decide to submit a request, Microsoft may require you to sign in. The app supports both a personal Microsoft account and a work or school account, although the support options available can differ by account type, product, region, or organization.
Give the app useful details: the device or feature affected, what you were doing when the problem occurred, and any error code shown on screen. “Wi-Fi stopped working after an update and shows error 10” is substantially more useful than “internet broken.”

3. Use the help link in Settings
Settings can provide help related to the page you are currently using. This is useful when you know which Windows feature is involved but do not know the setting or terminology to search for.
Open Start > Settings .
On the Settings Home page, select Get help .
Enter a question or describe the setting you are trying to change.
Follow the links or instructions provided by Get Help.
The result may open or direct you to the Get Help app rather than display a traditional help window inside Settings. That is expected: Microsoft has moved much of its current Windows assistance into the Get Help platform.
You can also reach Windows’ built-in troubleshooters from Settings. The current documented path is:
Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters
Select Run beside the available troubleshooter that matches your problem. The available list can vary by Windows version and device configuration.
4. Run a troubleshooter in Get Help
Get Help includes guided troubleshooters for several common Windows problems. Do not search only for a generic word such as “sound”; use Microsoft’s documented troubleshooter names where possible.
There are also troubleshooters for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) and Windows Media Player. For the network troubleshooter, Microsoft’s instructions may ask you to select Run network diagnostics after choosing connect to network and internet .
Open Get Help .
Enter the relevant troubleshooter name in Search .
Select the matching result.
Answer the questions and follow the prompts.
If Microsoft requests permission to collect diagnostic information, select Yes if you are comfortable proceeding.
Apply the suggested remedy, then test the affected feature again.
After scanning, Get Help displays its findings and recommended actions. If a fix works, close the app and continue using Windows. If it does not, record the result and any error code before trying another remedy or contacting support.

Do not rely on old MSDT instructions
Many older Windows guides tell you to download or run the Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tool (MSDT), or to open standalone troubleshooters such as Keyboard, Power, Search and Indexing, or Hardware and Devices. Those instructions are outdated for current Windows 11 releases. Microsoft has been retiring the MSDT platform and redirecting legacy troubleshooters to Get Help.
Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant (SaRA) is also not the general replacement for Windows diagnostics described here. Current Windows troubleshooters are integrated into Get Help.
5. Press F1 for help inside an app
Pressing F1 is the common Windows Help shortcut, but it is app-specific rather than a guaranteed Windows 11 help command.
Open the application or window where you need assistance.
Click inside it so it has focus.
In some applications, F1 opens that program’s documentation or help page. In others, it may do nothing or perform a different function. The result depends on the application and the control that currently has focus.

Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
On some laptops and keyboards, the top-row keys are assigned to volume, brightness, or other hardware controls. In that case, try Fn+F1 , or use the keyboard’s function-lock setting if available. This behavior is determined by the keyboard or PC manufacturer, not by a universal Windows 11 setting.
F1 is most useful when you are already working in a program and need help with that program’s commands. For Windows settings, Get Help or Microsoft’s Windows support site is usually more predictable.
6. Use Microsoft’s online Windows help and community support
For complex problems—or when Windows cannot start normally—open support.microsoft.com/windows from another device or browser.
The Windows support hub organizes Microsoft’s documentation into areas such as:
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.
Installation and updates
Drivers and devices
Network and internet
Files and storage
Security and privacy
Troubleshoot and repair
Select a category, or use the site’s search to find an article using the exact error message. Microsoft’s support pages also provide access to Communities help , where you can ask a question and receive answers from other Windows users and knowledgeable participants.
When posting a question, include the Windows version and build. To check them, enter winver in the taskbar search box and select Winver . Also include the device model, the affected app or component, the steps that reproduce the issue, and any error code. Avoid posting product keys, passwords, personal files, or other sensitive information.
The support site contains links to other Microsoft resources, including Microsoft 365 training, subscription benefits, and Microsoft security information. Those resources can be useful, but they are not all Windows troubleshooting channels.

F1 is the common Help shortcut, but it is controlled by the active application. It may open that app’s documentation, do nothing, or perform another function. Some keyboards require Fn+F1 .
Where are troubleshooters in Windows 11?
Go to Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters . You can also search for a named troubleshooter in the Get Help app.
Is Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tool still available in Windows 11?
Microsoft has retired or redirected the legacy MSDT platform and many inbox troubleshooters. For current Windows 11 guidance, use Get Help or the Other troubleshooters page in Settings instead of old MSDT instructions.
How can I check my Windows 11 build before asking for help?
Enter winver in the taskbar Search box and select Winver . Include the version and build number when reporting a problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
The Bottom Line
Start with taskbar Search for a quick answer. Use Get Help when you need a guided diagnosis, a named troubleshooter, or possible Microsoft support. For app-specific questions, try F1; for difficult or offline problems, use Microsoft’s online Windows support hub. Avoid legacy MSDT and old Control Panel troubleshooting instructions unless documentation specifically applies to an older Windows release.
