The only solution that works is uninstalling kb5065426 (or kb5065429 for Win 10). If an update wasn't fully installed, it's not installed. I run a PC with a single local admin account and lost access to my NAS following the update. Working on my wife's win 10 laptop to do some prep work for the unwanted upgrade to win 11, I found that I couldn't see the network from my old win 10 local admin account on her laptop. But, switching to her local user account I could see the network. So, back in my win 11 PC as an admin I created a standard user account and tried again but this time used the "use a different account" option when the connect to network dialog appeared - the network was now visible and the NAS disks could be mapped and still work after a reboot back into my admin account. So they've killed access to their own operating system. Thanks Microsoft! Will there ever be a fix? Everyone has a solution that requires a cost. Is Microsoft going to eat that cost for everyone they've effected? We can access the Windows CE Remote Management Tool through a browser. When adding the share as a network location, it goes through all of the steps and even adds it to the list in explorer but refuses to actually open directory. When adding the share as a network location, it goes through all of the steps and even adds it to the list in explorer but refuses to actually open directory. My guess is that you are having permission problems now. I am too, but I can create the shares. I just can't get the password to stick (username yes, and computername too - with the correction update on w11). Given the errors you see it is able to talk to the CE "server" share, so I think its some kind of credentials issue (as mine is). How are the shares setup on the client side? Is it guest access, user-based permissions or domain/workgroup based permissions? I think there could be a fix using guest-based, via some settings (two of them) described on this thread. Maybe. With Red Hat down, there are only a couple options left and then the USA is strategically weaker than the East in every way, manufacturing, technological innovation (the cloud-Such as OneDrive-actively deletes files with any code it does not understand unless you are on a business account- and even then , try doing crypto research and saving anything-even if it is encrypted- in the cloud, - the Cloud as it is will never be fully secure and will stifle all innovation outside established corporate academic partnerships. But I also think you could fairly easily use an alternative method to transfer the device data another way. They are choosing to address these issues over keeping compatibility with their older insecure methodology. There is more than one way to login to your PC. One way is a PIN, the other way is a password. (Look in Control Panel User Accounts). I have two PCs on my home network. I ran this Windows Update on PC#1. I made no changes to PC#2. Prior to this Update, on PC#1 in File Explorer I had mapped drives to shares on PC#2 and setup "Quick Access" folders pointing to shares/folders on PC#2. I had scripts setup to run nightly to copy everything from PC#1 to PC#2. After the Windows 11 Update KB5065426, I could no longer connect to the shares/drives/folders on PC#2. What happened was... prior to the Update, when I setup the connection to the shares/drives on PC#2 for the first time, I entered the PIN (because I had PC#2 setup to login with PIN). Forever after that, you don't have to enter the PC#2 PIN again on PC#1 to connect to the PC#2 shares. Apparently, the Windows Update changed the login requirements (from PC#1 to PC#2) to the actual password to PC#2. The PIN that I had previously entered (a long time ago) wasn't sufficient anymore. Now, after the Windows Update, it requires the actual password, not just the PIN. So after I re-mapped the drives/shares using the actual password (not the PIN) for PC#2, then all the shares started working. 0 votes I figured out this problem, at least for my situation. (Attempting to add the share addresses by browsing did not work, since the shares were not found when browsing.) (My NAS is new enough that it came with SMB2 and 3 already activated. I assume that was necessary for the "fix" to work.) Unfortunately, I have found that this procedure works for me only temporarily. After a while, the connection established as above fails. To reinstate connection to the shares, it is necessary to restart the computer and go through the whole setup process again. This is great. My remark to Microsoft is (and it seems many people feel likewise): can you please understand that companies like QNAP and other NAS/server makers have such a high standard in manufacturing, that their products easily run 24/7 for over a decade without ever faltering? This may be framed "legacy" equipment, but it performs better than many of todays similar products. While it is a much quicker and simpler fix than going through the SID changer process. If you read the scripts, it is telling you that you are removing security features: Set-SmbClientConfiguration - RequireSecuritySignature $false Set-SmbClientConfiguration - EnableInsecureGuestLogons $true These might be acceptable risks for a home PC, or not, but they certainly are NOT for any business environment. My problem is Win10 and Win11 computers. It would be helpful if when people reply they reference which “fix” worker for them and which Windows version both of their computers were instead of just saying “it worked for me” when there are many suggestions in the posts and as you say different Windows versions having the issue. I noticed that too. My original report involved 2 client PCs, one was 10 and one 11. Both failed with updates from the respective chains going at that time. A LOT of "worked for me" responses to various issues presented here are virtually impossible to tie to a proposed solution. It takes quite an effort to try to tease out the multiple issues and causes. Sharing between the two has been another nightmare, even worse because both systems are changing constantly thanks to Microsoft (and my choice to update the 10 system to 11). However I am now running two of them on Mint Linux on a permanent basis as the free Office versions they come with get the job done and these machines run in turbo charged mode vs the way they ran Windows 11. I only run Windows 11 on the other three because of Visio. The second someone makes a Linux equivalent of Visio I will be on Linux with everything. However I am now running two of them on Mint Linux on a permanent basis as the free Office versions they come with get the job done and these machines run in turbo charged mode vs the way they ran Windows 11. I only run Windows 11 on the other three because of Visio. The second someone makes a Linux equivalent of Visio I will be on Linux with everything. Disabled File and Printer Sharing and Network Discovery. Blocked insecure guest logons by default for better protection (which is what this post is about). I have also tried the other solution listed in https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/5551014/kb5065426-update-stops-file-and-print-sharing-from However the only fix to restore network shares has been to uninstall the buggy KB5065426. For decades having duplicate SSIDs has not really been an issue (see https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/archive/blogs/markrussinovich/the-machine-sid-duplication-myth-and-why-sysprep-matters ) however now one of these patches must be doing something to exchange Machine SSIDs during authentication. Its a security "improvement" because the level of security provided by credentials with SMBv1 is no longer considered good enough. Not a shock. I'll provide the links below to the update note and the CVE report that provides the rationale. Its valid, but ridiculous. Here's the relevant language from the update: [File server] This update enabled auditing SMB client compatibility for SMB Server signing as well as SMB Server EPA. This allows customers to assess their environment and identify any potential device or software incompatibility issues before deploying the hardening measures that are already supported by SMB Server. For detailed guidance, see CVE-2025-55234 . I really don't want to replace the server and I really can't abandon the update chain. I'm really disappointed that Microsoft would abandon users like this. This is just the little guys. Enterprise stuff would have moved past SMB1 long ago just via momentum. I've seen folks that have purchased computers from Amazon from "reputable" vendors that turned out to not use sysprep properly. In a home network you probably have SMBv1 and/or guest shares at work. I have Malwarebytes installed and it's easy to shut off realtime protection on it, but then Defender's realtime protection would kick in and you're not supposed to run SIDCHG while there is any realtime protection enabled. I suppose that using a hex editor on the C drive after removing it may be an option to try and do it manually, but that would only work if the SID resides in a known physical location, and could have a lot of unexpected consequences. It looks like the only way to bypass the problem is to use one of the other machines in the network as an intermediary in order to copies files or folders (resorted to doing that a couple of times already). Had I known in advance that the NUCs would have the same SID, I wouldn't have made the purchase. IK the latter is possible because I have had to do it. Worst case, uninstall MWB and then temp. disable WD, Run SIDCHG, then re-install MWB. It takes two reboots to complete the SID change process, so you might have to temp. disable 2x. 2. This is not MS's problem to fix. MS is actually addressing it as a security issue, which it kinda is. 3. Using system images is an industry-wide methodology, which, until now, hasn't been an issue. We have been doing it where I work for over 20 yrs. If you buy 5 of the same systems within 3 mo. of each other, they might have the same SID until the supplier updates their system image. SIDCHG is much more surgical than Sysprep, which also changes the SID. The free ver. works surprisingly well on both workgroup and domain workstations from my experience. YMMV Yes, it is a PITA and a huge hurdle for the less tech inclined, but if nothing broke, I wouldn't have a job. FWIW I'll inc. the instructions I wrote up for my team. I have seen the SIDCHG process alter the remote access code for TeamViewer after the SID is changed. Due to this, a remote tech needs someone onsite that can report back the new code to regain remote access.
