He and his close friend Shunsui Kyouraku were the first graduates of the Shin'ō Academy to become captains, trained directly by Genryuusai Yamamoto, whom they still call "Teacher." He believes soul reapers must constantly discern between them, a lesson he passed on to Rukia Kuchiki after the death of Kaien Shiba . Zanpakutō: Sōgyo no Kotowari (双魚理) Shikai Command: "All waves become my shield, all lightning become my blade! Sōgyo no Kotowari." Appearance: In its sealed state, it is a single sword. Thousand-Year Blood War Arc Ukitake survives the first invasion without losing his Bankai. During the second invasion, he performs the "Kamikake" (God's Hanging) ritual in the Rukongai district "Gekkō," sacrificing his internal organs to the Mimihagi-sama to become a vessel for the Soul King.
