Juushirou Ukitake was born into the lower noble Ukitake family, the eldest of eight siblings. From a young age, he suffered from a chronic lung disease, which caused his hair to turn white and often left him bedridden.
At age three, he was near death from his illness. His parents prayed to the "Mimihagi-sama," a deity worshipped in the Rukongai's Eastern District 76, which was actually the right arm of the Soul King. By binding that arm to his lungs, he survived, granting him an extraordinary level of spiritual pressure that far exceeds most captain-class soul reapers.
He and his close friend Shunsui Kyouraku were the first graduates of the Shin'ō Academy to become captains, trained directly by Genryuusai Yamamoto, whom they still call "Teacher." Ukitake is widely beloved by his subordinates—especially Rukia Kuchiki —and by many other captains and officers for his warm, righteous personality.
Family Structure
Father: Jūzō Ukitake (voice: Shūhei Sakaguchi)
Mother: Koma Ukitake (voice: Saori Seto)
Siblings: He has five younger brothers and two younger sisters, all of whom adore him. Their names include Harumi, Jitsumi, Hagimichi, Hana, and Tama (the youngest two remain unnamed in the anime).
Abilities and Powers
Despite his frail health, Ukitake's spiritual pressure is among the highest of all captains, sustained by his connection to the Soul King's right arm. He is also skilled in medical treatment due to his own illness.
His combat philosophy recognizes two types of battles: "battles to protect life" and "battles to protect pride." He believes soul reapers must constantly discern between them, a lesson he passed on to Rukia Kuchiki after the death of Kaien Shiba .
Zanpakutō: Sōgyo no Kotowari (双魚理)
Shikai Command: "All waves become my shield, all lightning become my blade! Sōgyo no Kotowari."
Appearance: In its sealed state, it is a single sword. Upon release, it splits into two blades connected by a rope with five talismans. The blades have reverse-trigger-like guards.
Ability: One blade can absorb an opponent's technique (e.g., a Cero), while the other releases it back. The talismans on the connecting rope can slightly alter the speed and trajectory of attacks, throwing off the opponent's timing.
Bankai: Never revealed in the series; its release command, ability, and form remain unknown. It is implied that the connection to the Soul King's right arm may have influenced the dual-blade form.
Story Involvement
Soul Society Rescue Arc
Ukitake collaborates with Kyouraku to destroy the Sōkyoku (the execution stand), saving Rukia Kuchiki . This forces them to fight their teacher Yamamoto. Later, he personally hands Ichigo Kurosaki the Substitute Soul Reaper badge, though the badge contains a secret monitoring function—a plan originally devised by Ukitake himself, later revealed to be manipulated by Tsunayashiro Tokinada .
He joins the battle in Karakura Town against Sōsuke Aizen. While assisting Kyouraku against Coyote Starrk, he is severely wounded by Wonderweiss Margera, who pierces his chest.
Thousand-Year Blood War Arc
Ukitake survives the first invasion without losing his Bankai. During the second invasion, he performs the "Kamikake" (God's Hanging) ritual in the Rukongai district "Gekkō," sacrificing his internal organs to the Mimihagi-sama to become a vessel for the Soul King. After Yhwach kills the Soul King, Ukitake releases the right arm, temporarily stabilizing the worlds. However, Yhwach steals the power, causing Ukitake to collapse.
Ten years later, his grave is shown, confirming his death. In the *Hell Chapter* (Jigoku no Mon), it is revealed that his sacrifice caused him to fall into Hell, where he impales Szayelaporro Granz with Sōgyo no Kotowari and sends him back.
Ukitake's aesthetic sense is famously poor—he praises Rukia's odd drawings sincerely and has no idea how to trim his bonsai properly.
He writes a popular action-adventure novel series called *Sōgyo no Okotowari!* for the Seireitei Communication; despite frequent breaks, it always ranks in the top three.
He believes in Santa Claus and once dressed as Santa (with Rukia's help) to deliver presents.
