by Dr Joram Abbas Jul 9, 2024 Travel and Tourism In a noteworthy address today, the Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism of Tanzania, Hon. Angellah Kairuki (MB), extended sincere commendations to the conservation officers for their exemplary contributions to the preservation of the nation’s natural heritage. In a meeting with the staff of the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA) held in the Morogoro Region, Minister Kairuki emphasised the importance of impartiality and fairness in their conduct. Acknowledging the Efforts of Conservation Officers Minister Kairuki commenced her address by acknowledging the assiduous endeavours of the conservation officers, who work assiduously to safeguard Tanzania’s diverse flora and fauna. She commended their dedication and commitment, underscoring the pivotal role they play in the conservation of Tanzania’s wildlife and natural resources. “Your endeavours are not only laudable but also indispensable for the long-term preservation of our natural heritage,” she asserted. The Minister’s commendation is timely, occurring at a juncture when conservation efforts are becoming increasingly crucial. Tanzania is home to a number of species that are considered to be among the most iconic in the world, including elephants, lions, and rhinoceroses. The work of the conservation officers ensures the continued viability of these species in their natural habitats, thereby contributing to the country’s ecological balance and the tourism industry. The Call for Impartiality and Fairness While commending the conservation officers for their commendable efforts, Minister Kairuki also issued a stark reminder regarding the vital necessity of impartiality and fairness in their professional conduct. She exhorted them to conduct their work without bias, ensuring that all actions taken are in accordance with the principles of justice and equity. It is of the utmost importance to maintain impartiality and fairness in all professional conduct. “This not only upholds the integrity of your work but also fosters trust and cooperation among the communities you serve,” she emphasised. The principles of impartiality and fairness are fundamental to the practice of conservation. These principles guarantee that all stakeholders, including local communities, are treated equitably and that conservation efforts are conducted in a transparent manner. Minister Kairuki’s appeal for these tenets highlights the necessity for ethical conduct in all facets of wildlife management. Meeting with TAWA Staff in Morogoro Region The meeting with the staff of the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA) in the Morogoro Region afforded the Minister an opportunity to engage directly with those on the front lines of conservation. TAWA, as the primary body responsible for wildlife management in Tanzania, plays a pivotal role in the implementation of conservation policies and strategies. During the meeting, Minister Kairuki discussed the various challenges and opportunities currently facing the Authority. She emphasised the significance of adhering to existing legislation, regulations, procedures, and guidelines in order to enhance productivity and improve performance. It is imperative that TAWA adheres to the established laws and regulations, as non-compliance would impede the organisation’s ability to function effectively. “By adhering to these guidelines, we can ensure that our conservation efforts are both efficient and sustainable,” she stated. Minister Kairuki’s emphasis on compliance with laws and regulations is intended to enhance the productivity and performance of TAWA. The Authority’s mandate encompasses the management of wildlife resources, the combating of poaching, and the promotion of sustainable tourism. In order to achieve these objectives, it is of the utmost importance that all employees adhere to the established protocols and best practices. One of the key areas of focus is the implementation of anti-poaching measures. The poaching of wildlife in Tanzania remains a significant threat to the country’s biodiversity, with the illegal hunting and trade of animals representing a significant challenge to conservation efforts. Minister Kairuki urged increased vigilance and coordination among conservation officers to combat this menace effectively. It is imperative that we maintain a state of alertness and proactivity in our endeavours to combat poaching. “This necessitates not only the rigorous enforcement of legislation but also the establishment of collaborative relationships with local communities and international partners,” she stated. Promoting Sustainable Tourism In addition to combating poaching, Minister Kairuki emphasised the importance of promoting sustainable tourism. Tanzania’s natural beauty and diverse wildlife attract millions of tourists each year, contributing significantly to the country’s economy. However, it is of the utmost importance that tourism activities are conducted in a manner that does not harm the environment or disrupt wildlife habitats. Minister Kairuki urged TAWA to collaborate closely with tourism operators to guarantee that all activities are sustainable and environmentally friendly. Tourism represents a significant component of the economy, yet it must be managed in a responsible manner. “It is of the utmost importance that we strike a balance between promoting tourism and preserving our natural resources for future generations,” she emphasised. Engaging Local Communities One of the most crucial elements in the process of successful conservation is the active involvement of local communities. Minister Kairuki emphasised the significance of community engagement in conservation initiatives, acknowledging the indispensable role of local support and collaboration for sustained success. Local communities are an invaluable partner in the conservation of natural resources. Their participation and assistance are of paramount importance for the success of our endeavours. It is imperative that they derive tangible benefits from conservation activities and are actively involved in decision-making processes,” she stated. By adhering to these principles and engaging in collaborative efforts, Tanzania can maintain the protection of its natural heritage and ensure the sustainability of its wildlife and natural resources for future generations.
