What the switch-off actually affects Analogue lines & ISDN Traditional phone lines and ISDN2/ISDN30 circuits are withdrawn entirely. Calls move to VoIP over broadband. Alarms & lift lines Intruder alarms, fire alarms, telecare and lift emergency lines that dial over analogue lines need digital-ready replacements or adapters - test before the deadline, not after. Card machines & fax Older payment terminals and fax machines that dial out over a phone line stop working. Modern terminals use ethernet, Wi-Fi or mobile data. Copper broadband ADSL and FTTC broadband ride on the same copper access network. Migration paths are SoGEA (broadband without a phone line) or full fibre.

Your phone numbers Numbers are ported to the new digital service, not lost - but porting must be planned as part of the migration, not left to the last week. PSTN switch-off questions When is the PSTN switch-off in the UK? expand_more Openreach completes the withdrawal of the analogue PSTN on 31 January 2027. The original December 2025 deadline was extended, but the programme has continued throughout - exchanges have been in 'stop sell' since September 2023, meaning new analogue lines can no longer be ordered. What happens to my business phone number? expand_more Your numbers are ported to the replacement digital service - typically a hosted VoIP platform - and continue to work exactly as before. Porting is a standard, regulated process, but it needs to be scheduled as part of your migration rather than attempted after your analogue line is ceased. Will my alarm system still work after the switch-off? expand_more Not if it dials out over an analogue phone line. Intruder alarms, fire alarms, telecare units and lift emergency phones that use the PSTN need to be moved to a digital communicator, a mobile (roaming SIM) path, or an analogue adapter that has been properly tested with your alarm receiving centre. What replaces a traditional landline for business? expand_more Hosted VoIP - calls carried over your broadband connection - is the standard replacement, from £5.95 per user per month. For the underlying connectivity, copper broadband (ADSL/FTTC) is replaced by SoGEA or full-fibre services. Do I need to do anything if I already use VoIP? expand_more Check the rest of the estate: broadband still delivered over copper, alarm and lift lines, door entry systems, franking machines and card terminals are commonly missed even in businesses whose telephony has already moved to VoIP.
