Turning on purchase verification helps prevent unauthorized purchases on your device. When purchase verification settings are turned off, it may result in unauthorized purchases. You assume responsibility for all charges including unintended or unauthorized purchases. If you don't recognize a Google Play purchase, you can report it. Learn how to report charges you don't recognize . To keep your account secure, review and update your purchase verification settings. Verification settings only apply to purchases made through Google Play’s billing system on the device where the setting is selected. When you create a family group on Google Play, your family members can use the family payment method to make purchases through Google Play's billing system. Learn how to create a family on Google and manage your family on Google . If needed, you can change or reset your Google Account password . Two types of verification Depending on your region, when making purchases through Google Play, regardless of your device, you may be prompted to verify the purchase in the following ways: Google Play purchase verification (e.g., PIN, pattern, Google Account password, biometrics, or Google prompts): This verification is for your specific device and Play account, and it is provided by Google. Payment method verification: Some payment methods (such as UPI in India, Pix in Brazil, pay at convenience store or with bank transfer, and others) have their own, separate verification process often via an app or login for that specific payment method. Google does not control this verification process. Verification Methods Google Account password In Settings in Google Play, you can always select your Google Account password as your preferred method to verify your purchases through Play. Your Google Account password is any combination of letters, numbers, and symbols you use to log into Google services. Learn about securing your account using strong passwords . This verification applies by device and the password can vary by Google account on the device. Biometric verification Biometrics refers to any fingerprint or face models stored on your device. Biometrics, when enabled for Play purchase verification, can be used for verifying purchases in place of other methods that are account-based like your Google account password. This verification applies by device, and applies to all Google accounts on a given device. Keep in mind that any biometrics stored on your device can be used for verification for any and all Google Accounts associated with the device. If you share your device and choose biometrics as your verification method, ensure you’re comfortable with all biometrics stored on your device being used for verification on all Google accounts on the device. With biometric verification turned on, you’ll be asked to use your fingerprint or face each time you make a purchase to verify it’s you. Open the Google Play app . At the top right, tap the profile icon. Tap Payments & subscriptions Purchase Verification . Turn Biometric verification on or off. Screen lock verification Eligible users can use their Android device PIN, pattern, or password to verify purchases through Play. If you’re eligible, you will be prompted with this option during checkout. This choice can’t currently be selected in Settings in Play. However, if you select screen lock as your method to verify purchases, you can change that decision later in Settings in Play by selecting biometric verification or Google Account password. Screen lock applies by device, and applies to all Google accounts on a given device. If you choose screen lock as your verification method, anyone who knows your device PIN, pattern, or password can also use it to verify purchases through Play for any and all Google Accounts associated with the device. Keep this in mind if you share your device with others. Note for screen lock users: If you set up biometrics on your device, and select biometrics as your method of Play purchase verification, at this time you may no longer be able to select screen lock to verify purchases through Play. Google prompts allow you to verify it’s you by tapping a notification sent by Google to another device. When gaming on Google Play Games for PC, you’ll be able to verify with Google prompts (if eligible) when making purchases. A notification will be sent to a trusted, paired device where you’re already signed in. Learn more about Google prompts . Tip: You’ll also be offered the option to “try another way” and verify your purchases using other methods, like your Google Account password. Setting your purchase verification Except for purchases via play.google.com and Google Play Games on PC, and depending on your device and region, you will either set your purchase verification (1) based on frequency of verification or (2) based on the payment method you use. Frequency-based verification choices If your setting is based on frequency of verification, you will select on what frequency you want Google Play to verify your purchases. Your choices are: Always (default setting): Verification is required for every purchase through Google Play's billing system, including within apps. Every 30 minutes (mobile device only): Every time you verify a purchase, you can continue to make purchases through Google Play's billing system (including within apps) for the next 30 minutes without verifying again. Never: Verification isn’t required for any purchases through Google Play’s billing system. Even if your frequency-based verification setting is “Always” or “Every 30 minutes," Google Play may not verify the purchase for certain payment methods, such as pay at convenience store or with bank transfer. Verification is always required for every purchase made through Google Play’s billing system for an app or game designed for ages 12 and under, and may also occur for potentially unusual activity on the account, even if you have your settings set differently. Payment method-based verification choices If your setting is based on payment method, you can choose when you require Google Play purchase verification to take place. These options give you the choice to skip Play verification in cases where your payment method already includes a separate verification process. This can simplify your purchase experience while still helping you keep your purchases secure. Your choices are: All payment methods: Play purchase verification will be required in addition to any verification required by your payment method. Only those without a separate verification process: Payment methods that don’t have a separate verification process will require Play verification, while those that have a separate process will not require Play verification. None: Play will not ask for your verification. Verification is always required for every purchase made through Google Play’s billing system for an app or game designed for ages 12 and under, and may also occur for potentially unusual activity on the account, even if you have your settings set differently.

If you require purchase verification for “All payment methods," you may have to complete purchase verification twice for payment methods that have a separate verification process: once with Google Play and once with your payment method. Verification requirement in your region You can view which payment methods will require Google Play verification if your setting is “Only those without a separate verification process:" Will require Google Play verification if you chose “Only those without a separate verification process” Unified Payments Interface (UPI) Credit or Debit Cards Google Play Balance & Google Play Gift cards How to choose verification settings Keep in mind that verification methods differ in the way they are applied across devices. Biometrics and screen lock (if available) apply for any Google Account on a given device. To use one of these methods for multiple devices, you’ll have to set it up for each device, and opt-in to biometrics or screen lock as your method of Play purchase verification for each Google Account on the device. Google Account password applies for a single, associated Google Account on a device. This means that a given device will require you to select the Google Account password as the verification method for each Google Account that shares the device. Finally, if you visit play.google.com , your Play purchase verification setting applies across any browser where you’re logged into Play at play.google.com or for purchases on Google Play Games on PC made via play.google.com . Tip: You can help prevent accidental purchases on your device from apps and games available outside of the Family section by turning on purchase verification. In apps or games designed for ages 12 and under, Google Play will re-verify the user before they can buy anything in-app. This helps ensure that the child’s purchase is approved by the financially responsible person. Open the Google Play app . At the top right, tap your Profile picture . Tap Payments & subscriptions Purchase verification Verification requirement or Verification frequency . Choose an option. Confirm the change. If you're using the Play Store app on your Chromebook: Open the Google Play Store app . Click Menu Settings . Click Verification preferences . Choose a setting. Follow the on-screen instructions. This will only work if you're using the Google Play Store app on your Chromebook. Find out more about how to use the Google Play Store on Chromebooks . To change verification settings, you'll need your Google password. Visit account recovery if you don't remember your password. Go to play.google.com . At the top right, click your Profile picture . Click Settings . Under "Verification preferences," select a setting. Your choices are: Purchases and app installs through play.google.com (default setting): Verification is required for every purchase through your Google account on play.google.com. Only app installs through play.google.com: When you’re signed in to play.google.com, verification isn't required for digital content purchases like paid content and in-app purchases. Verification is required for remote app installations through your Google account on play.google.com and for paid game installs from Google Play Games for PC. If you share your devices with others or want to prevent purchases of kid-friendly content through play.google.com, turn on verification for purchases. Verification settings only apply to purchases made through Google Play’s billing system. On your computer, open Google Play Games . At the top, click your gamer name. Click Settings .
