You need to go to Windows Explorer and modify the display option (include hidden files) Search in the directory documents and settings/user/application data/microsoft/word or excel or other and open the file that corresponds in time and date of modification to the last ten good minutes of the work that was in progress (i.e.: the program automatically saves every 10 minutes, just before the famous shutdown) (in the worst case, open all the files in there) and open the file corresponding to that timeframe with excel or word or the application in question and you're good to go. I had the same problem with a very important file, believe me it worked, I hope for you too See you later (For others who don't have solutions on this forum, avoid being too sure of yourselves by saying that it can't be done, especially when the person asking is in distress) when we don’t know, we look for it! PlimArsanc's note : If the solution proposed above does not work, you can try this software: https://www.commentcamarche.net/telecharger/utilitaires/8599-easy-office-recovery/ WOOOOOOAHH! Thank you very much! I also lost a job and it worked out :) I wasn't able to get it back completely but it's better than nothing. Help, how to do under Vista, it’s so pre-chewed and pre-digested that I can’t get past user level. I already had to find the translation for document and settings which doesn’t exist under Vista…. I would really like to recover my work from the last two days! View 41 comments

Little help for those struggling like me. So, if you've added a job to a Word document opened from an email, saved it little by little, but without first doing "save as" and you can't find your docs anymore. Go to the Internet page, Click on "tools" Click on Internet options In the "general" tab, there's a box for "temporary files". Go to: "settings" And click "show files" You will see among all the cookies a Word or Excel file, or anything you have saved, it won't have the same name, but a combination of numbers and letters. Click "copy" and paste it on your desktop or anywhere, it will take back the correct name it had from the attachment of the message. Then, there you go, you have found this file, all that's left is to open it! After struggling for 3 hours looking for a file, I thought I would have liked someone to write this for me on a forum (I searched but found nothing!). So administrators, if you move my message, could you put it somewhere else, for someone like me who may have lost something very important. Good luck to everyone. Hello, I had the problem described here. I followed the procedure you provided, but it doesn't work (there's no spreadsheet or xl document in the temporary files.... Do you have any other ideas? Thank you so much, it's insane... A whole TPE recovered thanks to you I am so relieved. Hello and thank you for your explanations on how to recover your work from a poorly saved attachment; they are very clear. Unfortunately, for a similar issue, they do not provide me with a solution. In your case, maybe you worked on the attachment from your email service provider's interface. I worked on an attachment (Word document) received in the Windows Mail software. Unfortunately, I didn't use "Save As" either, but only "Save" several times. However, I can't find the file path, if it still exists. Does anyone know how I should proceed (I've been using Vista for only 4 days and I've spent more time searching for this document than it might take me to rewrite it)? Thank you for your help if you know a solution. Hi try reopening the attachment from your email, the modifications have been saved on it. -- Keep us updated Regards Thank you for the response. But no, the attachment in the inbox has returned to its initial state, my modifications are absolutely not saved. Grr... View 19 comments

Hi everyone. I worked on my thesis for an entire day on a version that I had sent myself as an attachment. And of course, instead of "save as," I just hit "save" all day. As a result, this morning, nothing, no file since I hadn't saved it on my computer. I searched all the forums, did everything possible for 3 hours: recent files, internet temporary files, Word backup folder, nothing, I couldn't find anything. And just before I got back to work in tears, I downloaded the software "everything" from telecharge.com. I couldn't believe it! It's very easy to use, in the search bar, type the name of the attachment you worked on, and then miracle!!!! It finds it for you!!! I had saved it before going to bed around 10:30 PM, there was one named after my file dated 09/04/2010 at 10:29 PM, and... it was the right version!!!! I really hope my experience helps you!!! Julie Thank you thank you thank you from the bottom of my heart thank you!!! I was really desperate before I stumbled upon your message and finally found my document! SUPER ! Thank you so much, really a lot for this tip! I was able to recover an Excel file that I had worked on for over 3 hours! A RELIEF. Thank you a thousand times! I clicked on a bit of all the folders and then I came across an unsaved file (not saved by me, but my beloved computer saved it) and then my PC started the recovery! Thank you so much, I had spent the afternoon on that file (I'm a law student, you can imagine the number of pages it might have saved! I thought I was going to cry when I saw that my PC had saved everything!!! Phew and really, thank you to everyone who takes the time to help us with our somewhat silly problems :p => lesson: always save your document before starting and regularly click on the little floppy disk! We don't always think about it and we always think that our computer tool will not have the nerve to shut down! That's to underestimate technology ^^ I learned my lesson... but for how long? That is the question! I started my search on everything but nothing!! Can someone help me?? Is there a setting to adjust??? Thank you so much! It doesn't work by going into the hidden files. But this software is amazing!!! 3 hours of work saved... View 14 comments

Hello, another tip that worked for me on Win7 with Office 2010: go to C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel then into the Word or Excel folders depending on your issue. Excel had saved my workbook as *.xlsb (B for binary) and Word as *.asd (for AutoSaved document, I think) There you go, I hope this helps... el_nonoche Good job, I found an asd file (y) Thank you very much!

The program Everything : https://www.commentcamarche.net/telecharger/utilitaires/9197-everything/ Magical.... I was sure I had lost my file forever (I had opened a Word document coming from my Windows Live Mail and had actually saved it in the wind... instead of saving the file from my emails on my desktop) And this program just found that file for me!! I am over the MOON. Everything https://www.commentcamarche.net/telecharger/utilitaires/9197-everything/ Very good indeed! I couldn't find the damn temp folder used by Windows Mail for saving attachments directly (user's mistake) effective and fast! See you! Indeed, this software is great; I couldn't find the Excel sheets I hadn't saved before the power cut. In despair, I tried this software, and it found them just by searching for .xls in the file name!

To recover a file that you did not save (for example: Excel workbook) for my personal case even after shutting down the computer but not X days later either… With windows7 start menu search "Last modified date" example for my personal case 07/21/2010 see more results computer wait a bit, then expand the results column to see the modification dates and times do not search in folders, but scroll down a bit further and observe the modification times. in the desired time frame you will most likely find what you're looking for. Thank you for your help, I was able to retrieve my Word document!!! thank you thank you thank you thank you bbbccpp

thank you, you saved my life For me it doesn't work (Wordpad, under Seven). When I try to open the document in question (user or my documents), the program freezes and a white overlay appears, then the Wordpad application becomes unresponsive... I had the misfortune of wanting to save during a Wordpad crash... Any solution? Thanks, I have 3 hours of text that are there but inaccessible.
