There are no capital letters or punctuation to slow you down, which makes it a good baseline for comparing yourself with typists around the world. Most people land between 40 and 60 words per minute; regular touch typists reach 80 and more. What the test measures You type for one minute. The result shows your words per minute (WPM), your accuracy and the number of correct and wrong keystrokes. A word counts as five keystrokes, so speeds can be compared between languages and between tests. The words come from the most common vocabulary of the language, which keeps the test close to everyday typing. Logged-in users see their result on the highscore list; where a larger word list exists, the advanced mode with 1,000 words is available as well. Frequently asked questions about typing What is a good typing speed? The average typist manages around 40 words per minute. 60 to 80 WPM is a solid everyday speed, 80 to 100 is fast, 100 to 130 is very fast, and anything above 130 puts you among the top typists on 10FastFingers. Accuracy matters as much as the number: a fast run with many mistakes is slower in practice than a clean one. How is WPM calculated? Words per minute counts every five keystrokes as one word, so long and short words weigh the same and results are comparable across languages. Only correctly typed words count; mistakes are shown separately as wrong keystrokes and lower your accuracy. How can I type faster? Learn the ten-finger system so every finger has its own keys and you stop looking at the keyboard. Practise for ten to fifteen minutes a day rather than an hour once a week, and aim for accuracy first: speed follows once the movements are automatic. Repeating the one-minute test and watching your WPM over time shows what works. Why is my speed different in other languages?

Word length, accented letters and how familiar the words are all change the result. Indonesian or Malay words are short and use plain Latin letters, German and French need extra keys for umlauts and accents, and scripts like Thai, Hindi or Chinese take several keystrokes per word. Compare yourself with typists of the same language, not across languages. Does my keyboard layout matter? For the test itself, no: QWERTY, QWERTZ, AZERTY, Dvorak and Colemak all work, and the test only counts what arrives on the screen. It matters for the letters of your language: a layout that places ä, ç or ı on their own keys is faster than one that needs a modifier for them. What is the difference between the normal and the advanced test? The normal test uses the most common words of the language, the ones you type every day. The advanced test draws from a list of 1,000 words, including longer and rarer ones, and is available for languages with such a list. Both last one minute and show the same statistics. Why was my result not saved? Results are saved to your profile only when you are logged in. A test is also discarded when the AFK detection notices that you stopped typing for too long during the minute; the statistics are still shown, marked as not saved. Log in, keep typing until the timer runs out, and the next result counts. How long is the typing test? The standard typing test lasts one minute, which is long enough for a reliable speed and short enough to repeat a few times.
