The United States has six standard time zones : Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific across the contiguous states, plus Alaska and Hawaii–Aleutian for the two non-contiguous states. Most of the country moves its clocks for daylight saving time from March to November — but Arizona and Hawaii do not . Arizona keeps Mountain Standard Time (UTC−7) all year and does not spring forward . From March to November that puts it on the same clock as Pacific Time (California); in winter it falls back in line with the rest of the Mountain zone. The state opted out of daylight saving in 1968 — in a desert summer, an extra hour of evening sun just means an extra hour of air conditioning. The exception is the Navajo Nation in the northeast corner, which does observe daylight saving so the reservation keeps one clock across the parts of it that reach into Utah and New Mexico. And inside the Navajo Nation sits the Hopi Reservation , which follows the rest of Arizona and does not observe DST — so in summer a single drive across northeastern Arizona can cross the daylight-saving line several times. Florida: two time zones The entire peninsula — Miami, Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville — is on Eastern Time , but the western end of the panhandle is on Central Time . The line runs roughly along the Apalachicola River: Pensacola and the counties out to the Alabama border stay Central, one hour behind Miami. It catches people driving west along the Gulf coast, where the clocks jump back an hour partway across the panhandle. Indiana: a genuinely confusing history For decades most of Indiana stayed on Eastern Standard Time year-round without daylight saving, drifting relative to its neighbors every summer. The state finally adopted daylight saving statewide in 2006 — but it’s still split: most counties are Eastern, while a cluster near Chicago in the northwest and another near Evansville in the southwest are Central. That tangled history is why the IANA database carries several America/Indiana/* zones — counties changed their rules on different schedules. The Mountain–Central line: the Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas, Texas Across the Great Plains the Central/Mountain boundary cuts through the middle of several states, generally along county lines rather than the state border. Kansas, Nebraska, and both Dakotas each have a Mountain-time western edge, and Texas keeps its far-western tip — El Paso and Hudspeth County — on Mountain Time to line up with New Mexico, an hour behind Houston and Dallas. Because the line follows counties (and in a few places rivers), a one-color-per-state map gets all of these wrong. Hawaii: no daylight saving Hawaii is on Hawaii–Aleutian Standard Time (UTC−10) and, like Arizona, does not observe daylight saving. In winter it’s two hours behind California and five behind New York; in summer, when the mainland springs forward, it’s three and six hours behind. The far-western Aleutian Islands of Alaska share Hawaii’s −10 standard offset but do change their clocks — which is why Alaska shows up as a two-zone state in the table above.
