What mmsys.cpl Opens
Running mmsys.cpl opens the Sound dialog. This dialog usually contains four main tabs: Playback , Recording , Sounds , and Communications . Some hardware drivers may add extra pages inside individual device properties, but the main Sound dialog is built into Windows.

How to Open mmsys.cpl
The quickest method is through the Run box:
Press Windows + R .
Type mmsys.cpl .
You can also open it from Command Prompt, Windows Terminal, or PowerShell by typing control mmsys.cpl and pressing Enter. If one method does not work, try the other because some locked-down systems handle direct Control Panel applet commands differently.
In Windows 11, you can also go through Settings by opening Settings , choosing System , selecting Sound , and then using More sound settings . In Windows 10, open Settings , go to System , choose Sound , and look for Sound Control Panel under related settings. The exact wording can vary by Windows build and device type, but the destination is the same classic Sound dialog.

The modern Sound page is good for everyday changes such as changing volume, selecting an output device, adjusting input volume, and opening the audio troubleshooter. mmsys.cpl is better when you need older but still important controls.

Use this when audio is coming out of the wrong device, such as monitor speakers instead of headphones, HDMI instead of desktop speakers, or a Bluetooth headset instead of a USB DAC.
Connect the speakers, headphones, monitor, dock, or USB audio device you want to use.
Open mmsys.cpl .
Select the Playback tab.
If the device is missing, right-click inside the blank area of the device list and enable Show Disabled Devices and Show Disconnected Devices .
Select the device you want to use.
Click Set Default . If the button has a menu, choose whether the device should be the default device, the default communications device, or both.
Click Properties , open Levels , and confirm that the device is not muted or set very low.

The Default Device is the main output Windows uses for general sound. The Default Communications Device is used by some calling and chat apps. Setting both to the same headset can make behavior predictable. Setting them separately can also be useful, such as using desktop speakers for music while keeping a headset as the communications device.

A Bluetooth headset may expose different modes. A USB interface may show speakers, headphones, S/PDIF, or line outputs depending on the driver.
Pay attention to the device names, icons, and status text. Ready usually means Windows can use the device. Disabled means the endpoint has been hidden from normal use until you enable it again. Not plugged in or disconnected usually means Windows knows about the endpoint but does not detect an active connection.
Right-clicking a playback device gives you several useful options. Test plays test tones. Set as Default Device changes the general output. Set as Default Communication Device changes the preferred call output. Disable hides the endpoint from regular device lists. Properties opens deeper settings.

Understanding the Recording Tab
The Recording tab lists input endpoints. This includes microphones, line inputs, capture devices, and sometimes software-created devices. The moving level meter is one of the fastest ways to see whether Windows is receiving a signal.
If the wrong microphone keeps being selected, disable unused microphones only if you are sure you do not need them. For example, many laptops include a built-in microphone, a webcam microphone, and a headset microphone. Disabling the extras can reduce confusion, but it can also break fallback behavior when your headset is unplugged.
For USB microphones and audio interfaces, the Recording tab may not show every hardware feature. Some devices rely on manufacturer software for direct monitoring, gain, polar pattern, or routing. Use mmsys.cpl for Windows endpoint selection, then use the manufacturer app for device-specific controls when needed.
Device Properties That Matter
Select a device and click Properties to open its detailed settings. The pages vary by device and driver, but several are common.
General: Shows the device name, controller information, jack information when available, and whether the device is enabled.
Levels: Controls output volume, microphone level, balance, mute state, and sometimes boost.
Listen: For recording devices, this can route microphone input to a playback device. Use it carefully because it can create echo or feedback.
Enhancements: May include processing such as loudness equalization, bass boost, room correction, or noise suppression. The options depend on the driver.
Advanced: Usually contains the default format, sample rate, bit depth, and exclusive mode controls.
Spatial Sound: Appears on some playback devices and can enable supported spatial audio formats.
If audio is distorted, delayed, or inconsistent, the Enhancements and Advanced pages are worth checking. Disabling enhancements is a common troubleshooting step because driver-level effects can conflict with games, meeting apps, recording software, and external audio hardware.
Choosing Sample Rate and Bit Depth
The Advanced tab often lets you choose a default format such as 16-bit 44100 Hz, 16-bit 48000 Hz, 24-bit 48000 Hz, or other formats supported by the device. There is no single perfect setting for every PC.
For general Windows use, 24-bit 48000 Hz is a reasonable choice when the device supports it reliably. Video, streaming, and many communications workflows commonly use 48000 Hz. Music libraries may use 44100 Hz. Changing this setting will not magically improve poor speakers or a noisy microphone, but choosing a stable format can prevent glitches with some drivers.
If you hear crackling after changing formats, go back to a conservative option such as 16-bit 48000 Hz or 16-bit 44100 Hz. If you use professional audio software, set Windows and your audio application deliberately so they do not fight over the same device format.

Exclusive Mode: Leave It On or Turn It Off?
The Advanced tab may include options that allow applications to take exclusive control of a device. Exclusive mode can be useful for some music production, low-latency playback, and bit-perfect audio workflows. It can also cause confusion if one app grabs the device and another app goes silent.
If everyday apps randomly lose sound, try disabling exclusive mode for the affected playback or recording device. If you use digital audio workstations, audio interfaces, or special playback software, test carefully before turning it off because those tools may benefit from direct device access.
Stop Windows From Lowering Volume During Calls
If music, game audio, or shared audio drops when you join a meeting, check the Communications tab.
Open mmsys.cpl .
Select the Communications tab.
Choose Do nothing if you do not want Windows to reduce other sounds during calls.
Click Apply and OK .
This setting is especially useful for people who present, stream, record tutorials, or share computer audio in meetings. If you prefer Windows to make calls easier to hear, leave one of the volume-reduction options enabled. The right choice depends on whether call clarity or consistent system volume matters more for your workflow.

Change or Disable Windows Event Sounds
The Sounds tab controls the sounds Windows plays for system events. You can change a sound scheme, assign a sound to a specific event, or choose no sound for events you find distracting.

Use Sound Scheme to choose a preset or disable system sounds.
Select an event under Program Events if you want to change only one sound.
Choose a sound from the list or select no sound for that event.

For a quiet work setup, disabling unnecessary event sounds is often better than lowering system volume. Lowering system volume may also make meetings, alerts, and media harder to hear, while changing a sound scheme targets the distracting events directly.
Show Disabled and Disconnected Devices
One of the most useful tricks in mmsys.cpl is easy to miss. On the Playback or Recording tab, right-click inside the device list and enable Show Disabled Devices and Show Disconnected Devices . This can reveal devices that Windows knows about but is currently hiding.
This matters when a headset, USB microphone, HDMI output, or line-in device seems to have disappeared. If the device appears after enabling these view options, right-click it and choose Enable . If it still shows disconnected, check the cable, port, dock, Bluetooth connection, monitor input, or driver.

Do not disable devices casually while troubleshooting. Disabling a device can make it vanish from apps, and the fix is not always obvious unless you remember to show disabled devices again.
Create a Desktop Shortcut for mmsys.cpl
If you change audio devices often, a shortcut saves time.
Right-click an empty area of the desktop.
Select New , then Shortcut .
For the location, enter control mmsys.cpl .
Name it something clear, such as Sound Control Panel .
Finish the wizard.
You can also pin Windows Sound settings through the Settings app, but a desktop shortcut to the classic panel is useful for people who regularly switch between speakers, headsets, microphones, capture cards, and audio interfaces.
Troubleshooting: mmsys.cpl Will Not Open
If the Sound dialog does not open, start with simple checks before assuming Windows is damaged.
Try control mmsys.cpl instead of only mmsys.cpl .
Open it through Settings , System , Sound , and More sound settings or Sound Control Panel .
Restart the PC, especially after driver updates or Windows updates.
Check whether your work or school device blocks Control Panel applets by policy.
If multiple Control Panel applets fail, run Windows system repair tools from an administrator terminal, starting with sfc /scannow .

Open Device Manager and confirm the audio device is detected and enabled.
HDMI and DisplayPort audio can be confusing because the audio device may follow the display connection. If a monitor is asleep, disconnected, or using a different input, its audio endpoint may appear unavailable. Docks can behave similarly after sleep or reconnecting.
Troubleshooting: Microphone Not Working
If your microphone does not work, separate Windows detection from app permission.
Open mmsys.cpl and go to Recording .
Speak into the microphone and watch the level meter.
If the meter moves, set that microphone as the default and then check the app settings.
If the meter does not move, open Properties and check Levels and mute controls.
Check Windows microphone privacy permissions.
Check physical mute switches on headsets, webcams, keyboards, and USB microphones.
For Bluetooth headsets, disconnect and reconnect the device, then check whether Windows is using the headset microphone or another microphone.
Try another USB port or cable for USB microphones and audio interfaces.
For meeting apps, also check whether the app is using noise suppression, automatic gain control, or a browser permission prompt. A microphone can be correctly selected in Windows and still be blocked or overridden inside the app.
Troubleshooting: Audio Crackling, Echo, or Delay
Crackling and delay can come from drivers, wireless connections, enhancements, overloaded USB hubs, or mismatched formats. Start with the settings that are easiest to reverse.

Echo during microphone use often comes from monitoring, speaker bleed, or the wrong input. In a microphone’s Listen tab, make sure Listen to this device is not enabled unless you intentionally need it. If you use speakers during calls, switch to headphones to test whether the microphone is picking up speaker audio.

Windows 11 puts more audio controls in Settings and Quick Settings than older versions did, but the classic Sound dialog remains useful for advanced tasks. Windows 10 also has both the Settings Sound page and the classic Sound Control Panel. Windows 7 and Windows 8 rely more heavily on Control Panel for these tasks.
The exact path to the classic panel may change slightly across Windows releases, but the Run command remains the most direct approach. If you support multiple PCs, teaching users to press Windows + R and enter mmsys.cpl is often simpler than describing every Settings layout.
Important Cautions
mmsys.cpl is safe when used normally, but a few settings can create confusion.
