Instead, travelers are being more intentional about where and how they’re getting away this summer. “Travelers aren’t just checking destinations off a list,” said Melissa Krueger, CEO of luxury travel advisor resource Classic Vacations . “They’re thinking about how they want to feel on a trip, who they want to be with, and whether an experience is truly worth their time and investment.” This shift is partially about saving money at a time when airfare costs have skyrocketed, but it’s also about prioritizing value in new ways. “What we’re seeing is that travelers are not just asking, ‘Can I afford this trip?’ They’re asking, ‘Will this trip feel worth the money?’” said Christina Bennett, consumer travel trends expert at Priceline . “That is pushing people to compare destinations more carefully, think about total trip cost, and choose places where they can get a lot out of a few days away.” In short, travelers are looking for ways to do more with less, while prioritizing experiences that feel meaningful to them. And when it comes to certain experiences, travelers are willing to scrimp elsewhere so they can spend where it counts. Tara Cappel, founder and CEO of group travel company FTLO , refers to this as the “fluxury” trend. “It basically means opting for more modest accommodations or using public transport more to save budget for a really standout experience like a luxury spa, an amazing cooking class, or a Michelin meal,” she explained. It’s a high/low approach to travel that lets you have the best of both worlds—AKA an incredible vacation that doesn’t leave you with a mountain of credit card debt. According to data from Dollar Flight Club , Reykjavik is one of the top five international destinations on travelers’ vision boards this summer (right up there with classic bucket-list cities like Rome and Paris). According to Jesse Neugarten, founder and CEO of Dollar Flight Club, this newfound interest in Iceland’s capital highlights a broader trend. “It’s both a cooler-weather pick and one of the few genuinely affordable ways into Europe right now,” he said. “The fuel crisis is reshaping behavior, and hotter summers at home are pushing people north.” Similarly, bookings to Northern European cities like Oslo and Helsinki have more than doubled compared to last year, according to a recent trend report from travel agency Fora . Compared to buzzy summer hotspots like Positano or Mykonos, these northern locales offer “fewer crowds, cooler temperatures, dramatic landscapes, and a less polished, more familial style of hospitality,” said Fora advisor Anna Tretter . “Traveling to these northern European cities and nature destinations isn’t nearly as much about the scene as it is about the scenery and discovering something new along the way,” she added. If fighting crowds (and heatstroke) along the Mediterranean sounds more like a nightmare than your dream vacay, a trip up north could be your ticket to a European summer getaway you won’t need another vacation to recover from. Distinctive domestic destinations If you decided to put plans for a big international trip on hold this year, you’re not alone. “Evolving entry requirements, flight disruptions, and the unpredictability that can come with international travel are all real factors travelers are weighing,” Krueger said. Pair that with rising airfare costs (especially for long-haul trips), and many travelers are choosing to stick closer to home—but they’re not skipping out on a summer vacation entirely. In fact, although 44% of Americans say a summer vacation feels out of reach this year, 73% say they are unwilling to give it up, according to recent data from Priceline. That means road trips and short flights within the U.S. are looking more appealing than ever. And that doesn’t mean you have to resign yourself to a lackluster summer vacation. “Travelers are realizing you don’t have to cross an ocean to find elevated, immersive experiences,” Krueger said. She pointed to destinations like Charleston, Hawaii, Napa Valley, and the Florida Keys as places with distinctive character where you can build an exceptional trip without ever leaving the country. According to Fora’s trend report , Italy remains the most-booked European country for summer 2026, with Rome being the most popular city. However, travelers are starting to look beyond the big cities and busy Amalfi Coast as those hot spots become more and more congested. The same report noted that towns on Italy’s western coast are rising in popularity, while Cappel named Sardinia as one of the destinations where FTLO is seeing the biggest year-over-year increase in bookings. It’s a testament to Italy’s staying power as a bucket-list vacation destination, in spite of the crowds and expense. “Whether it’s Rome and Florence, the Amalfi Coast, or a lesser-traveled corner of Puglia or Sardinia, you can spend a lifetime traveling Italy and still feel like you’re just getting started,” Krueger said. “There’s always another region, another season, or another bottle of wine that makes you feel like you’ve discovered something personal.” The Third Coast Unless you’re a Midwesterner yourself (hey, neighbor), this region of America probably doesn’t come up much when you’re dreaming up your next summer vacation destination. But the Midwest’s reputation as fly-over country is starting to change, according to Priceline’s travel trends report for 2026 . In a recent survey, 63% of travelers said they are more interested in traveling to the Midwest than they used to be. And several Midwest states are seeing the increased numbers to back that up. Fora’s travel trend report noted that states like Michigan and the Dakotas have seen travel bookings more than double over the past year. Destinations along the Great Lakes are in particularly high demand, with places like Mackinac Island and Traverse City offering all the charm of a coastal getaway with a freshwater twist. “There’s nothing quite like laid-back lake life, the kind of slow, nostalgic, unfussy family vacation that makes places like northern Michigan and Wisconsin so special,” Tretter said. And if you’re hoping to save on airfare this summer, you may want to set your sights on the south. “Transatlantic routes are getting very expensive because they burn the most fuel per seat, and airlines are passing it straight through to travelers,” Neugarten explained. By contrast, short-haul flights to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America are much more affordable, offering ways to experience an international vacation without spending thousands on flights alone. Tretter noted that she often recommends Caribbean islands like Anguilla and St. Barts to her clients, as summer is the prime time to take advantage of low-season hotel rates and less-crowded resorts. And although you may have to brave some sweltering temps, June and July generally fall outside of peak hurricane season, which often disrupts travel to the region later in the year. Countryside escapes In our increasingly connected (and overstimulating) digital world, people are craving a return to the simple life, and they’re willing to travel for a taste of it. According to Classic Vacations’ summer travel trends forecast , travelers are increasingly seeking out rural destinations where they can escape the noise of modern life and immerse themselves in the simple pleasures of country living. “I believe people are hungry to feel like they’re contributing to something—to the land, to a community, and to a shared way of life,” Krueger said. “More than anything, farm stays offer a connection to place, seasonality, and the people who grow and make things.” In destinations like Napa Valley, Colorado’s mountain towns, and the wide-open plains of Montana, you can experience what it might be like to live outside of cell service range—at least for a few days. It’s a chance to fully unplug and reconnect with nature, which is exactly the kind of screen-free escape many of us are craving right now.
