What's the difference between Standard, Deluxe, and Business editions?
Each edition offers different levels of data depth:
Standard ($49.95/yr): 31 core data fields including ZIP code, city, state, county, area codes, coordinates, time zone, and basic FIPS codes. Perfect for address validation and basic lookups.
Deluxe ($89.95/yr): 60 data fields adding Census 2020 demographics (population, households, income, housing values), statistical areas (MSA, PMSA, CBSA), and mailing indicators. Ideal for marketing analysis and demographic research.
Business ($189.95/yr): 94+ data fields with complete Census 2020 data, annual ACS updates, 5 supplemental files for multi-county ZIP logic, city aliases, and place FIPS codes. Best for enterprise applications, logistics, and comprehensive analysis.

Can I upgrade from Standard to Deluxe or Business later?
Yes! You can upgrade at any time by simply paying the price difference. Your subscription end date remains the same, and you'll immediately get access to the additional data fields.
For example, if you purchased Standard and want to upgrade to Business, you'd pay $140 (the difference between $189.95 and $49.95), and your 12-month update period stays unchanged. This is accessible directly from your Account Homepage . It will list all of your subscriptions and offer an immediate upgrade option. No waiting, the upgrade is instantaneous. Contact us if you have any further question.
How do the monthly updates work?
Every purchase includes 12 months of monthly updates at no additional cost. Each month, we sync with USPS updates and release a fresh version of the database on the 1st of the month. We send out a monthly email notice to all active subscribers announcing the new release, as well as how many changes have taken place.
Access your updates two ways:
Manual Download: Log into your account and download the latest version anytime
Automated FTP: We'll set up free FTP/SFTP/FTPS access so you can automate monthly imports
After 12 months, you keep all the data you've downloaded. Renewal is only needed if you want to continue receiving monthly updates.
We recommend that automated FTP transfers be scheduled for the 5th of the month, just in case of a delay. We have not missed publishing on the 1st in many years, but occasionally there are re-publications to correct something that missed our review. Automating on the 5th of the month ensures any corrections are captured without reprocessing.
Do I need a redistribution license?
You need a redistribution license if:
You're distributing the data to clients or customers outside your organization.
You're packaging the data with software you sell or license to others.
You're providing the data as a service to third parties.
Examples: SaaS applications, store locator widgets for clients, data resellers.
A regular license is fine if:
You're using the data internally within your organization.
All users are employees or contractors of your company.
You're using it for analysis, mail sorting, logistics, or internal tools.
Still unsure? Contact us and we'll help you determine which license you need.
What file formats are included?
Every edition includes all formats at no extra cost, available for immediate download:
CSV (Comma-Separated Values): Universal compatibility with any application, programming language, or import tool
Microsoft Excel (.XLS): Ready for immediate use in Excel for analysis and exploration
Microsoft Access (.MDB): Database format for Access users
SQL Files: Ready-to-import for MySQL and SQL Server, includes table creation scripts
All formats contain the same complete data - choose whichever works best for your workflow, or all of them!
How accurate is your ZIP code data?
We maintain high data accuracy through a rigorous quality process:
Official USPS & Canada Post Licensed: We're authorized distributors of official postal data, not scraping or aggregating from unreliable sources.
Manual Verification: Our team manually reviews data sources rather than just running automated scripts.
Monthly USPS Synchronization: We update on the 1st to match official USPS publication schedules.
Years of Experience: Since 2003, we've refined our processes to catch errors before they reach you.
We stand behind our accuracy with a 30-day money-back guarantee. Learn more about our quality process →
What happens after my 1-year subscription ends?
We provide a 30-day grace period after your subscription expires to give you time to renew without interruption.
If you don't renew: Per our Terms of Service , your license ends and you must stop using and delete the data within 10 business days. This applies to production systems, backups, archives, and any derivative databases.
Here's what outdated data looks like in production:
Your store locator returns "no locations found" for valid ZIP Codes - or stale coordinates recommend a store 30 miles away when one is 3 miles closer
Your checkout rejects valid addresses with "please enter a valid ZIP Code"
Your territory assignments route leads to the wrong sales rep
Your customer calls support frustrated that "your system is broken"
Why this happens:
ZIP Code data isn't static. The USPS modifies approximately 2,000+ ZIP Codes every year - that's 1 in 20.
ZIP+4 codes change even faster: 5% update every single month .
Population growth, new construction, and delivery route optimization trigger changes constantly.
Coordinates shift. Area codes split (and they're splitting faster than ever).
Demographics refresh yearly. City and county assignments change with every annexation.
Industry benchmarks on data decay:
22% of customer/business data becomes outdated annually (Gartner)
B2B contact data decays at 2.1% per month (Marketing Sherpa)
Poor data quality costs organizations ~$15 million per year on average (Gartner)
The hidden cost: Data decay compounds. A database that's "close enough" in year one becomes progressively less reliable each month you skip updates. The customers who wait years between updates inevitably contact us the same way: "A customer complained their ZIP Code isn't in our system." By then, the data has drifted significantly from reality.
Planning ahead? Lock in 2 or 3-year licenses and save 10%. Check purchase options for each version. Annual renewal keeps your applications working and your customers converting.

How do I import the database into my application?
Every edition includes multiple formats to fit your workflow:
CSV (Comma-Separated Values): Universal compatibility - works with any database, spreadsheet, or programming language. Most databases support direct import commands like LOAD DATA INFILE (MySQL) or BULK INSERT (SQL Server).
SQL Files: Ready-to-use import scripts for MySQL and SQL Server. Simply run the provided .sql file and the complete table structure is created automatically with proper field definitions and recommended indexes.
Microsoft Access (.MDB): Open directly in Access - ready to query immediately.
Microsoft Excel (.XLS): Open in Excel for immediate analysis and exploration.
For developers: CSV format works seamlessly with all major programming languages (Python, PHP, Node.js, Java, C#, Ruby, etc.). We provide complete field definitions and data types on our Technical Specs page .
What coordinate system do you use for latitude/longitude?
All latitude and longitude coordinates use the WGS84 datum (EPSG:4326) - the standard coordinate system used by GPS, Google Maps, and most mapping applications worldwide.
Coordinate format:
Decimal degrees format (e.g., 40.712800, -74.006000).
Precision: 6 decimal places (accurate to approximately 4 inches).
Represents the centroid for most ZIP codes, generally the geographic center.
PO Box-only ZIP codes use the Post Office location when available.
Military ZIP codes and certain other classifications may not have coordinates.
Newly created ZIP codes may temporarily lack coordinates until officially geocoded.
Need precise boundary data? Our separate ZIP Code Boundary Data GIS product provides complete polygon shapefiles for mapping and spatial analysis.
How do you handle ZIP codes that cross county or state lines?
23.3% of all ZIP codes cross county boundaries - this is a well-known challenge with ZIP code data since ZIP codes were designed for mail delivery, not geographic boundaries.
Standard & Deluxe editions: Each ZIP code is assigned to its primary county (typically the county receiving the highest mail volume for that ZIP code).
Business edition: Includes a supplemental Multi-County table that lists ALL counties a ZIP code touches. This allows you to implement your own assignment logic based on your specific needs.
Best practice: If county-level precision is critical for your application (demographics, tax rates, jurisdiction boundaries), use the Business edition's Multi-County data to handle these overlaps appropriately for your use case.
Need exact boundaries? Our ZIP Code Boundary Data GIS product provides precise polygon data for mapping county overlaps and performing spatial analysis.
Can I calculate distances between ZIP codes using your data?
Yes! With the included latitude/longitude coordinates, you can calculate straight-line distances using standard formulas:
Haversine formula: Great-circle distance (most common, accurate for most use cases).
Vincenty formula: Higher precision for geodesic distance calculations.
Implementation options:
Database functions: Most databases have built-in spatial functions (MySQL's ST_Distance_Sphere() , PostgreSQL's PostGIS)
Programming libraries: Available for all major languages (Python's geopy, JavaScript's Turf.js, PHP's geodist, etc.)
FREE Radius Finder Application: Included with every purchase! Desktop application works offline with no expiration. Also available as an online tool in your account.
Performance: With proper database indexing, radius searches across all 41,500 ZIP codes complete in well under a second on modern hardware.
Important note: Calculated distances are "as the crow flies" (straight-line), not driving distances. For routing applications requiring turn-by-turn directions, you'll need a routing engine like OSRM, GraphHopper, or Google Maps Directions API.
What's the best way to keep my database synchronized with monthly updates?
We offer two update delivery methods for your convenience:
1. Automated FTP/SFTP/FTPS (Recommended for production):
Free access provided to all customers
Files published on the 1st of each month
Set up scheduled tasks/cron jobs to download and import automatically
Best practice: Schedule imports for the 5th of the month to allow time for any republications (rare, but it happens)
2. Manual download from your account:
Log in anytime at your account homepage to download the latest version
Ideal for development environments or occasional updates
Update file options:
Full database files: Complete dataset (CSV, Excel, Access, SQL formats)
Update files: CSV/tab-delimited update files containing only the month's changes (deletes followed by adds). If a record is updated, it appears as a delete (last month's data) followed by an add (current month's data).
Update strategy recommendations:
Full replacement method (recommended): Most customers replace the entire table monthly. Simplest approach with lowest risk of sync errors.
Transaction file method: Process only monthly changes. More complex but useful for large-scale applications tracking change history.
Zero-downtime updates: Use database table swapping techniques (e.g., RENAME TABLE old_zips TO backup_zips, new_zips TO active_zips ) for production environments.
Always keep backups: Retain at least the previous month's data before importing new updates.
