2015年5月，在微軟Ignite開發者大會上，該公司高層主管 傑瑞·尼克遜 透露，Windows 10將是這個Windows作業系統品牌的最後一版產品 [ 6 ] 。Windows將不再有新版本問世，取而代之的將是定期的改進和更新。得以採用這種方式的部分原因是，把 開始功能表 和內建應用程式等作業系統部件分解為獨立部分，各個部件可以獨立更新，組成完整的Windows核心作業系統。 [ 7 ] [ 5 ] 2017年4月22日，微軟確認Windows 10將採用每6個月一次版本升級的升級方式 [ 8 ] 。值得注意的是，這一升級方式也被許多開源專案，如 Fedora [ 9 ] 、 Ubuntu 、 Glibc 、 LibreOffice 等使用。 長期支援版本的生命周期類似於傳統形態的Windows，根據微軟的固定生命周期策略，這些產品將享受5年的主流支援和5年的擴充支援 [ 10 ] 。如基於Windows 10 1507版的長期支援版本，其主流支援將於2020年結束，外延支援則將於2025年結束。 半年更新版本的生命周期參照微軟的現代生命周期策略執行。根據微軟的說明，自2017年4月發布的版本起，每個半年更新版本將在18個月內繼續受支援 [ 11 ] 。 Windows 10各個版本（包括預覽版、正式版和更新）將在不同的通道分批發布。這些通道又被稱為「環」。Windows 10每天會進行一次編譯，產生的版本會在Canary通道發布，隨後進入Selfhost通道。這兩個通道都位於微軟內部，在那裡，測試團隊將進行一定的測試，保證其基本可靠性（他可以自舉，並且不出現異常行為）。 此後，該版本將被推播至 Windows預覽體驗計畫 95時代就傳承至今的取消版本浮水印，二是將其推播入自RS2開始引入的發布預覽通道。這一通道在平時只提前推播最新穩定版本的最新修補程式，直到新版本即將發布時才推播新版本，但是更加穩定 [ 14 ] 。 在以上流程結束之後，新的正式版本或更新先推播至普通使用者通道；待一段時間後再推播至企業使用者通道，而他們可以選擇無限期延遲更新。 2020年6月15日，微軟將原有的「環（Rings）」更改為「頻道（Channels）」 [ 15 ] 。更改後，各通道所承擔的用途基本不變。 Windows 10正式發行的版本（Windows 10 版本 1507，開發代號「Threshold 1」）於2015年7月發行，正式版本的版本號是10.0.10240。雖然微軟聲明稱Windows 10沒有 RTM
